It’s hard to believe fall is just around the corner, isn’t it?! Summer flew by at the speed of a comet, and now we are at the cusp of autumn. It won’t be long before the leaves put on their annual color fest and the air takes on a frosty chill.

Fall decorating is one of my favorite activities this time of year. You know what I don’t love? Dragging out boxes from storage! I’d do anything to avoid that task.

So, I spent an afternoon combing through the world’s marketplace—Amazon—to see if any new fall decor caught my eye. I’ve been following Valerie Madelyn’s shop lately, and the fall decor does not disappoint! This year’s fall selection includes whimsical frolicking gnomes, well-crafted metal ornaments, and exquisite faux floral wreaths and garlands. The list below contains my top 12 favorite fall home decor accents from Valerie Madelyn’s shop. (I’m not sponsored by Valerie Madelyn, by the way. I just love the products!)

Ready for some autumn inspiration? Let’s get started!

How to draw a Celtic triquetra using an equilateral triangle

7/5/2024

Triquetra sketch with added details and shading.
Triangles are the perfect shape to use as a guide for drawing triquetras. The triangle’s shape provides the template for the loops, determining the shape and size of the finished design.

In today’s drawing tutorial, we will use an equilateral triangle, a compass, and a bit of freehand to create a triquetra (or trinity knot) that is even on all sides. This drawing project is similar to a previous tutorial with three overlapping circles.

So grab your drawing supplies and let’s get started!

How to draw a triquetra using a right-angle triangle

7/5/2024

Stylized triquetra sketch.

A triquetra (or trinity knot as it’s sometimes called) can be a handy design element to put in corners as a stylish way to fill space. In this tutorial, we will draw a triquetra using a right-angle triangle that puts the point of one loop into the 90˚ corner.

No special supplies are needed for this tutorial, just a pencil, eraser, paper, and a straight-edge. But if you are not using grid paper a T-square or L-square might come in handy. If you don’t have grid paper or a T-square use a piece of paper folded into quarters.

Remember to draw your triangle and initial arcs lightly as it is only a guide that will be erased.

So let’s get to it!

Finding the center of a triangle diagram 1.

The past few weeks have been dedicated to new tutorials featuring triquetras using triangles as a guide. In this technique, arcs are drawn around a central point. You can certainly find this point using guestimation, but there is a way to find the precise center of the triangle. So today’s blog takes you step-by-step through the process!

Summer weather is finally here and my garden is coming along nicely. This year the plan is to use my raised garden bed for herbs and wildflowers, with the idea of creating a small fairy garden once everything comes into bloom. I can’t wait to design a magical hiding spot for the local fairies underneath the vibrant summer flowers!

It’ll be a few more weeks before I have that lush, fragrant flower garden. In the meantime, I’m doing some research for inspirational ideas. It’s been a minute since I’ve created an outdoor fairy garden (I usually create indoor fairy gardens with faux florals) so this will be a nice change of pace.

If you’re new to fairy gardens, you may feel overwhelmed with all the possibilities. You may have questions and don’t know where to start. If this is you, read on! This blog post will help you break the process into small chunks, allowing you to create a successful plan for a whimsical fairy garden that will last all summer!

I’m often guilty of not sharing “inside” information about my design process. Like many artists, I keep my inspiration close to the vest. I also get so caught up in creating while working on projects that sharing the behind-the-scenes stuff is not even on my radar!

So today I thought I’d pull back the curtain—just a tad—to give you a sneak peek into what inspires me and the supplies that help me realize my finished pieces.

I recently became an affiliate of Factory Direct Craft (FDC), and am stoked to start sharing some of the supplies I have been using for many years. FDC has a wide selection of unique fabric florals and faux greenery, and I love that this selection allows me to create whimsical floral designs for my online shop.

The crafty people among you may already follow me on my social media platforms (if not there are convenient icons at the end of this post for you to click…hint, hint!) and may have seen my finished faux floral designs. In the spirit of sharing, this article will highlight some of the FDC florals I have used in my favorite spring and summer floral designs and candle holders.

So let’s get to it!

Anyone who hasn’t been hiding under a rock lately knows Dark Academia is having its day! The timelessness of the decor never goes out of style, even when trends change. The one drawback of Dark Academia is that it is…well…DARK!

If you love the Academia vibe with its focus on collegiate accents, nostalgia, traditional elegance, aristocratic sensibilities, and hints of world travel but don’t love the heaviness of the dark furnishings consider Light Academia. Use lighter colors on the walls, fabrics, and furniture with a few carefully selected dark pieces for contrast to achieve the same Old World charm without the brooding masculinity associated with Dark Academia.

Are you interested in Light Academia but need some inspiration to get started? Then you’re in luck! I scoured our favorite online marketplace—Amazon—to find 20+ home accents and furnishings you will love!

How to draw a simple Celtic triquetra using three circles

Interlaced double triquetra pencil drawing

In today’s blog, I will walk you through the steps for drawing a simple triquetra using three circles to get an equilateral shape. There are other methods you can use, such as using a square to map out your angles and intersections, but whichever method you choose, you will end up with the equilateral triangle as the base for this style of triquetra. (There are other triangles and triquetra shapes, but this tutorial is for the triquetra that is even on all sides.) In my method, you won’t draw this triangle, but if you connect the intersections, you will see that they unveil an equilateral triangle.

This time of year (as winter slowly rolls into spring) is ideal for refreshing and breathing new life into your interiors.

One room you can’t ignore is the bedroom. Did you know you spend a third of your life sleeping? And that does not include all the other activities in that space, such as dressing, reading, or working. So why not turn your bedroom into a romantic hideaway or enchanting escape from reality?

This month’s challenge was to work on design inspiration for a bedroom that embraces a combination of cottage and fairy aesthetics to create a comfortable, romantic space you will never want to leave! What is Cottagecore?

Cottagecore is an aesthetic that embraces simple, quiet living with a focus on the home, handmade and vintage items, homemade food, self-sufficiency, and a slower pace of life. The aesthetic of Cottagecore reflects the desire to live in a more romanticized way by surrounding yourself with flowery, feminine, and nostalgic things. It is the antithesis of our hectic, materialistic, modern way of life.
